IAME Series Asia just completed its very first back-to-back races at Bira Kart Pattaya! Round 2 and Round 3 of the series saw 85 and 84 drivers respectively battle it out on the flowing circuit of Thailand’s popular seaside city. The weather was typical Thai, with scorching heat and the occasional bit of rain. At times the track recorded surface temperatures as high as 60 degrees Celsius! Teams were challenged to find the right setup to make their tyres work in the searing heat, and this became the focus of the mechanics and team bosses throughout the two race weekends.
Overtaking opportunities on this 1,321m, 15 corner circuit during both weekends was aplenty. Each race saw extremely competitive racing, with top class race craft on display, both from the drivers in pursuit and from the defending drivers in front. This was most evident in the Cadet category, which saw the largest grid of up to 30 eager young karters. Like most races of this competitive level and scale, there are bound to be thrills and spills. Fortunately, none were too serious, and the races were able to go ahead without much disruption.
The highlight of the 2 races must go to Senior driver Amer Harris Jeffry. Amer was involved in a dramatic off-track incident during Heat 1 of Round 3 – apparently a result of a technical issue with his kart. Besides picking up a badly bruised knee, he had to start at the very back of the grid in the Pre-finals on Sunday. Not one to give up easily, Amer drove superbly to finish 8th. Capitalizing on the mid-pack placement in the Finals starting grid, Amer continued his show of masterful race craft to emerge the eventual champion of the Seniors category in Round 3!
