Singapore - The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé takes excitement to the next level with its emotional, progressive design and groundbreaking UI concept MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience. The new CLA offers an arry of intelligent solutions – from from MBUX Interior Assist, which recognises operational demands from gestures and equips the interior with intelligence and understanding indirect voice commands, to the ENERGIZING COACH that provides individual fitness recommendations. There are also ingenious details when it comes to the aerodynamics and functions for the Intelligent Drive driving assistance package. The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down, validating its predecessor's status as a design icon.
"Aesthetically expressive, highly emotive and a renewed validation of its predecessor's design icon status, the new CLA is set to take the world by storm again. Now incorporating the latest in personalised driving experience like the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), the CLA forms a new canvas for the digital-savvy who are looking to live life by their own rules." said Mr. Philipp Hagenburger, President and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Singapore.
Radically repositioning the brand with its design language and dynamism, expansion and rejuvenation of the compact car range are key factors behind the sustained market success that Mercedes-Benz has enjoyed. The first CLA Coupé launched in 2013, followed by a facelift in 2016, setting the stage for style and connectivity. To date, the CLA Coupé is the most successful compact car product in sales figures and it strengthens our conquest of new buyers.
With expressive design, revolutionary technology coupled with an intuitive operating concept, it embodies the self-expression that CLA drivers strive for – creativity, culture, emotional design and a strong sense that only they define. Their journey is of the utmost importance to them. They have a taste for the uncommon. For the extra-ordinary. For the exceptional.
The equipment features: plenty of selection and an exclusive special model
Individualisation of the CLA Coupé begins with the Progressive line. This includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels, a leather-lined multifunction sport steering wheel and comfort seats with seat cushions adjustable for depth and angle and a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat backrest. Externally the Progressive line is also distinguishable by the visible exhaust tailpipes and the discreet chrome trim strip on the front and rear aprons.
A sporty look inside and out comes courtesy of the AMG Line with 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, AMG front apron, AMG rear apron and AMG side sill panels, sports seats, multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather, light longitundinal-grain aluminium trim elements or black DINAMICA microfibre. On top of this, the AMG Line has the lowered comfort suspension.
In its first year, the new CLA will also be available as an Edition 1. In terms of both the exterior and the interior, this limited edition special model has numerous visual accents which underline its exclusivity. The Edition 1 includes LED High Performance headlamps, 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with orange- painted rim flanges, sport seats and the Night package with numerous trim elements in high-gloss black and, in the Edition 1, highlights in orange.
In the interior, the Edition 1 has orange-coloured contrasting topstitching on the dashboard, sport seats, armrests, door panel waistlines and floor mats. Ambience lighting with 64 colours is on board as standard. Special trim elements with "Edition 1" lettering further add to the exclusivity. The Edition 1 is available in the paint finishes polar white, night black, cosmos black, mountain grey and designo mountain grey magno.
Design: Pure emotion
"As a four-door coupé, the new CLA intrigues with its puristic, seductive design and brings the design DNA of 'sensual purity' to a new level. It is compelling for its perfect proportions, which are very close to the initial design sketches: a long, stretched bonnet, a compact greenhouse, a wide track with flared wheel arches and our typical GT rear end with a pronounced 'Coke-bottle shoulder'," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG. "In short, the CLA Coupé has the potential to become a modern design icon."
The combination of the long, stretched entry line above the windows and frameless doors give the CLA Coupé its unmistakeable sporty and elegant character. Forming the front end is the striking front section which is raked forwards like a shark nose with a long, stretched bonnet featuring powerdomes. Flat headlamps together with the low slung bonnet and the diamond radiator grille with central star create the vehicle's sporty face. The two-piece, narrow tail lamps and the number plate housed in the bumper make the rear of the CLA look especially wide.
With the greenhouse moved back, the sporty GT rear achieves a balance between elegance and sportiness. Featuring pared-down lines, the precisely modelled side profile provides an interesting interplay of light and shade. Dispensing with the upper shaped edge of the side wall permits muscular and athletic shoulder shaping, stretching from the front wheel arch through to the sculptured rear. Flush with the outer edge of the body, the wheels with their flared wheel arches and wide track epitomise dynamism and give the vehicle a sporty presence.
Interior design: cool staging of intelligent technology
In the interior, all elements are arranged according to the overarching design themes of ‘high tech’ and ‘youthful avant-garde’ – the steering wheel, the door handle operating module, the centre console or the seats. As in the A-Class, the unique interior architecture is shaped in particular by the avant-garde design of the dashboard: The designers completely dispensed with a cowl above the cockpit. As a result, the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one front door to the other with no visual discontinuity. The widescreen display is completely free-standing.
The lower section is visually separated from the main body of the instrument cluster by a "trench", and it appears to float in front of the instrument cluster. The optional ambient lighting enhances this effect. The air vents in a sporty turbine-look are another highlight.
Aerodynamics: intelligent solutions intelligently designed
On the way to series production, the aerodynamics of the new CLA underwent a considerably longer phase of optimisation than its predecessor in the form of similations, before the first measurements of models were carried out in the wind tunnel. This was made possible by the efficient use of the airflow simulation tool in the digital development process.
Considerable advantages of the airflow simulations include the simple changes to vehicle proportions and investigating the effects of changes in form on the flow around the vehicle without having to make changes to the physical model. The result also sets standards: A Cd value of 0.23.
MBUX Interior Assist: an even greater experience
By recognising movements MBUX Interior Assist brings added intelligence to the interior. Thanks to innovative technology, MBUX now supports the occupants by making various comfort and MBUX functions even simpler and more intuitive.
Interior Assist operates in non-contact mode and functions both in sunlight and in complete darkness.
It enables the adaptation of screen content as soon as a hand approaches the touchscreen in the dashboard or the touchpad on the centre console, for example. Individual elements are highlighted according to the currently active menu. In addition, the system is able to distinguish between the driver’s and front passenger’s wishes and thus knows for whose seat the massage function is to be activated, for example.
A special feature of Interior Assist is the personal favourites function. It is accessed by holding a hand over the centre console with the index and middle finger spread in a V-shape. In this way, any command which is controllable via MBUX can be stored for simple access. One typical favourite command is ‘navigate me home’. As the system is able to reliably recognise who is operating it, the driver and front passenger respectively can even assign different favourites to the same hand position.
There are other functions which can be controlled intuitively, without any need to practise corresponding gestures: In the dark, the reading lamp can be switched on and off by briefly extending a hand towards the rear-view mirror, for example. If the driver reaches over towards the unoccupied front passenger seat in the dark, it will be illuminated automatically. This makes it easier to find any items which may have been deposited on the seat. As soon as the person’s hand leaves this area, the light automatically switches off again.
ENERGIZING comfort control: wellness while driving
Multicontour seats with massage function and climate control are offered for the first time in the CLA as options. Energizing comfort control links various comfort systems in the vehicle. The intelligent recommendations from the ENERGIZING COACH are completely new. This service based on an intelligent algorithm recommends one of the ENERGIZING packages' programmes depending on the situation and individual.
Intelligent Drive: functions from the S-Class
The CLA has the very latest driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support, and thus provides the highest level of active safety in this segment with functions adopted from the S Class. For the first time, the CLA is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. For example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as part of the optional Driving Assistance Package is not only able to support the driver to automatically maintain the correct distance from the vehicle ahead, but also to give the driver noticeable steering assistance, even on bends. As part of the Driving Assistance package, the CLA also offers the Active Emergency Stop Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Steering Assist, Active Braking Assist with cross-traffic function, PRE-SAFE system and PRE-SAFE Plus.
The new CLA comes with enhanced Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, it can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or to prevent them altogether.
Active Lane Keeping Assist is able to warn the driver by means of pulsed vibrations in the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h. If the vehicle passes over a solid line, it can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side. In the case of a dotted line, such intervention takes place only when there is a danger of collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane (including danger from oncoming traffic).
PRE-SAFE PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the brakes of the stationary vehicle, thus lowering the risk of injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps: better visibility in all conditions
Another example of automotive intelligence and the transfer of technology from the luxury segment to the compact class are the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps. They allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. Each headlamp on the CLA incorporates 18 individually controllable LEDs. The daylight-like light colour of the LEDs is easy on the eyes and has a positive effect on concentration. The road ahead is precisely and brightly illuminated. LED High Performance headlamps are a further option. As standard, the new CLA is equipped with halogen headlamps with integrated LED daytime driving lamps. The tail lamps are also available with all-LED technology.
Powertrain: clean, efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines
The new CLA relies on the four-cylinder petrol engine which is completely updated to relaunch the compact model series. In comparison to the previous generation, they are characterised by significantly increased power, improved efficiency and emissions.
The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé: Highlights
The main points at a glance
The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down. With the greenhouse moved back, the sporty GT rear achieves a balance between elegance and sportiness.
All variants of the new CLA Coupé offer very good aerodynamic drag (cd value from 0.23). Despite the wider track, the frontal area remained the same size as on the predecessor model (2.21 m2).
More spacious and practical:
The new CLA has tangibly more space at many spots in the interior. At the front, for example, headroom has increased by 17 mm and elbow room by 35 mm. Thanks to a wider opening (+262 mm), the boot compartment is now more convenient to load than the predecessor model.
Cooler style in the interior:
A generous feeling of space thanks to the widescreen display and the special wrap around architecture of the dashboard are combined with high-quality materials.
The CLA possesses the latest version of the MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience - voice control. The 'Hey Mercedes' voice assistant can recognise and answer even complex queries on an increasing number of topics.
A new control experience:
The MBUX interior assistant recognises operating requests from movements. This makes various comfort and MBUX functions even simpler and more intuitive.
For the first time, the CLA is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. Functional scopes from the S-Class are available in the Driving Assistance Package.
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps:
The optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps allow quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current road and traffic conditions. With the adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, the high beam can remain on at all times, because approaching traffic or traffic up ahead is masked out by partially deactivating individual high-beam modules.
