Yokohama, Japan - A few months back, while browsing my Facebook newsfeed, I came across Naoko Ouka, a young woman driving a JZA80 Toyota Supra. I immediately wanted to shoot her car while learning more about her not as a race queen or model but as an owner and driver of a legendary sports car.
After shooting Yuki’s Beetle from Aireal, I was inspired to create a series of stories about female tuned car owners in Japan. Thus this Supra is the second article in our ‘Girl Owner Series’!
I met Naoko close to the shooting spot - a commercial pier in Yokohama. On weekends, ports and hangars are not all busy and we had no problem driving around and parking her pink-purple Toyota for photos while discussing about her passion.
Naoko got the car nearly 11 years ago and has been in love with it ever since. She had it repainted in her signature colour; pink-purple, and all I can say is that it suit the Supra (and her) very well.
Naoko is the founder of the Tokyo Girl Car Collection, a group of female car enthusiasts that often gather at their favourite spot; Daikoku Futo PA. They became famous in the scene and often get solicited by foreign and domestic medias. If you happen to be in the area, maybe you’ll see them on the road or at Daikoku! I’m sure you’ll find plenty about them on the web but let’s get back to Naoko and her Supra.
The Toyota, a 1995 JZA80 Supra has been lovingly cared for by Naoko, who uses it as a daily-driver. Equipped with Work Emotion Kiwami wheels and Tein suspension, the Supra sits low and looks sleek without being undriveable on open roads.
The engine has been left untouched except for a JUN ECU and exhaust system, a Trust GReddy massive front intercooler and a HKS oil cooler. Just from the hardware additions alone the car still develops nearly 500hp and is more than enough for good fun!
The exterior was enhanced with a RIDOX bodykit - an aero kit designed by Max Orido though Naoko added a GT-Wing from Top Secret that has been modified to pass regulations here.
The interior too repainted in pink with the addition of a couple of JUN meters plus a pair of Recaro seats.
The car is by no means an ode to perfection but it doesn’t have to be. It is Naoko’s, the way she likes it and a ride with true personality, unlike demo cars built only for shows. This Supra is driven on a daily basis by someone who wouldn’t change it for any other car!
Naoko-chan has always loved the JZA80 and couldn’t imagine driving anything else, reason why she kept the car for such a long period of time - something very prevalent with enthusiast here. I can totally relate to that too even though I am not a native here, as I’ve had my RX-7 for many years and also cannot imagine for one minute trading it for another car. I suppose this is what passion really means.
Although she drives such a car, Naoko is absolutely not the boyish type. She always carries a pair of high heels to match her feminine outfits but of course she has proper shoes for driving! I found this mix as refreshing as I found it cool and Naoko’s enthusiasm definitely affected me as well as her smile was highly contagious! Go Girl, keep it up and enjoy your car life!
